Tony Exum, Sr.

Sen. Tony Exum, Sr. is a former firefighter battalion chief from Colorado Springs running for reelection to the Colorado Senate in November. Tony was first elected to the Colorado House in 2012, where he served four terms and was elected to the state Senate in 2022. As a legislator, Tony has sponsored bills to increase access to public school meals, protect public drinking water sources, support veterans, and encourage economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2026, District 11 could hold one of the most competitive races of the year for the state Senate. Tony has proven his ability to win tough elections, and with the DLCC’s support, he’s ready to defend his seat and help Democrats gain the ground they need to form a supermajority in the Colorado Senate.

2026 is a historic opportunity to build Democratic power in Colorado and establish a supermajority in both chambers of the state legislature.

Colorado Democrats won a trifecta in 2018 when they flipped the state Senate blue and have since made impressive strides in improving the state’s quality of life, including legislation to expand access to affordable housing and health care, protect the environment, strengthen public education, and support working families.

This year, Democrats need to gain three seats in the Colorado House and just one in the Senate to establish a supermajority in each chamber. This would allow constitutional amendments to be placed on the ballot without Republican support – a huge step for democracy on issues such as voting rights and reproductive freedom.
