John Lowndes, a native Central Floridian, attorney, and Maitland Mayor, is running this fall to flip a seat in the Florida Senate. John was first elected to the city council in 2013, serving two terms before being elected Mayor. He has brought a calm, practical approach to public service that has guided major community investments, including a new public library, downtown revitalization, and long-term planning to manage growth responsibly. Now, John is ready to bring his solutions-based leadership to Tallahassee to fight for policies that benefit Florida’s working families.

A Democratic victory in District 10 would help set the stage for breaking the GOP supermajority in the Florida Senate. John, with the DLCC’s support, is ready for a competitive race to flip this seat and help Florida Democrats gain ground in November.

2026 is a historic opportunity to build Democratic power in Florida and break toxic supermajorities in both the state House and Senate.

Across both chambers, Democrats only need to flip 9 seats to end the GOP supermajorities, block veto overrides, and check the reckless adoption of Trump’s extremist policies at the state level. Florida Republicans have turned a blind eye to the affordability crisis, cut Medicaid access for seniors, and demolished economic opportunity for Floridians.

The DLCC has been on the ground working with Florida Democrats to win key races, recruit competitive candidates, and identify the districts where nationwide grassroots support will have the most impact in 2026. Since 2020, we’ve highlighted 47 Florida state legislative candidates in our Target Races program, including Emily Gregory, who won a stunning special election victory in March to represent HD-87, flipping the district that includes Mar-a-Lago.

Progress is possible in Florida, but we have to keep up the momentum. We cannot afford to miss this moment to put Florida Democrats on the strongest trajectory to build back power after almost 30 years of one-party rule. The DLCC is all hands on deck to support Florida Democrats committed to building a brighter future for the Sunshine State.
