2026 is a historic opportunity to end Republicans’ stranglehold on power in Iowa. Republicans have used their power to pass an agenda, including a six-week abortion ban, that is wildly out of touch with Iowans. Democrats need to protect all 17 seats in the Iowa Senate and gain one seat in the Iowa House to keep the GOP out of a supermajority.Â
Democrats have the momentum in Iowa. In 2025 we flipped two Senate seats that Trump had won by double digits and DLCC Target Race candidate Catelin Drey broke Republicans’ Senate supermajority. With a competitive race for governor, the DLCC is working around the clock to elect Democratic state legislators to ensure an incoming Democratic governor has the power to veto the MAGA agenda.
In 2026, the DLCC is designating 15 Target Races across the state – critical races that can put both chambers on a path to lasting Democratic power. We are investing early in the candidates and districts where the data shows Democrats can make the biggest gains. Learn more about the races we’re following below:

DLCC Board Member

Jennifer Konfrst is a tireless advocate for Iowans – and against GOP extremism – in the state legislature. She flipped an Iowa House seat blue in 2018 and was the first woman to be elected Democratic leader of the chamber in just her second term. Throughout her time in office, she has listened to her constituents about the issues that matter most to them and has been a strong champion for public education, health care, workers’ rights, affordable housing, and finding ways to support families.
Representative Konfrst was first elected to the DLCC Board in 2024.

The Supreme Court Won’t Save Us: Fundamental Freedoms on the Line in the StatesWhen the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, they didn’t just eviscerate federal protections for abortion access – they opened the door to completely undermining a number of our most personal rights and freedoms that were constructed on the same legal precedent as Roe. Now Republican state lawmakers have been emboldened in their attempts to chip away our rights to birth control, same-sex relationships, and marriage equality, solidifying state legislatures as the frontline in the fight for Americans’ freedoms.
