Redistricting Update
GOP control of the legislature has allowed Republicans to draw aggressive gerrymanders that have kept state Democrats out of power for roughly 30 years. Republicans could weaponize Callais to remove Democratic congressional representation altogether in the state, on the heels of their gerrymandering gambit earlier this year.
The DLCC is aiming to break the Republican supermajority in both chambers in 2026. While this won’t challenge the Republican trifecta in the state, every seat flipped matters and is part of the DLCC’s long-term work to build power in the South.
After flipping two state legislative seats earlier this year, we are now just 7 seats away from breaking the House supermajority and 2 seats away from breaking the Senate supermajority. Since the legislature controls the redistricting process, the balance of power in the statehouse is crucial.
