About Nathan
Rep. Nathan Small is a third-generation New Mexican from Doña Ana County running for reelection to the New Mexico House this fall. A lifelong outdoorsman from a family of teachers and ranchers, Nathan has a passion for public service. He served two terms on the Las Cruces City Council before being elected to the state House in 2016. As a state representative, Nathan is focused on ensuring that the policies coming out of Santa Fe prioritize New Mexico’s diverse working families and communities, now and for decades to come.
District 36 is a perennial battleground where Nathan has proved his ability to win extremely competitive elections. Now, with the support of the DLCC, he’s ready to protect this seat once again and help Democrats gain the ground they need to establish a stronger majority in the New Mexico House.
New Mexico
2026 is a historic opportunity to build Democratic power in New Mexico and establish a Democratic supermajority in the New Mexico House.
New Mexico’s Democratic trifecta has shown the nation what is possible under bold leadership. In 2025, New Mexico became the first state to pass universal childcare, a landmark policy that will save the average family $12,000 per child a year. Democrats also stepped up and protected health care for New Mexicans after Republicans in Congress slashed Medicaid funding.
New Mexico has been on the DLCC’s Target Map in recent cycles. Despite a windfall of GOP spending totaling over $13M in 2022, state Democrats maintained their majority and protected it in 2024. In partnership with DLCC Board Member and New Mexico Speaker of the House Javier MartĂnez, we’ve built durable power and are on the cusp of creating the strongest Democratic majority in 30 years.
With only three additional seats needed to build a Democratic supermajority in the New Mexico House, 2026 is a critical year to rally behind candidates running in the most competitive races across the state.
