2026 is a historic opportunity to break the GOP supermajorities in the Ohio House. Democrats need to gain just 6 House seats to break the GOP supermajority and have candidates running in 97 out of 99 House districts, the best candidate recruitment in several cycles. Ohio Republicans have wielded their supermajorities to make it harder to vote and ignore the will of voters who voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.
In the event of an incoming GOP governor, breaking a supermajority would help Democrats block Republicans’ anti-union legislation and prevent extreme GOP bills from being enacted with emergency clauses.
To build power, the DLCC has designated a slate of Ohio Target Race candidates running in some of the state’s most competitive and consequential districts. These candidates represent critical opportunities to gain seats, strengthen Democratic influence in Ohio, and lay the groundwork for future majorities.
The DLCC is investing early in the candidates and districts where the data shows Democrats can make the biggest gains. By supporting strong campaigns, expanding the map, and competing everywhere possible, we’re building the foundation for a more balanced and representative Ohio statehouse.

The Supreme Court Won’t Save Us: Fundamental Freedoms on the Line in the StatesWhen the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, they didn’t just eviscerate federal protections for abortion access – they opened the door to completely undermining a number of our most personal rights and freedoms that were constructed on the same legal precedent as Roe. Now Republican state lawmakers have been emboldened in their attempts to chip away our rights to birth control, same-sex relationships, and marriage equality, solidifying state legislatures as the frontline in the fight for Americans’ freedoms.
