2026 is a historic opportunity to break the GOP supermajority in the Kansas House. Democrats need to gain just 5 House seats to break the GOP supermajority.Â
Republicans in Kansas have used their supermajority to override numerous vetoes from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, including passing multiple anti-abortion laws and repeatedly attacking the LGBTQ+ community. Breaking the supermajority would help uphold a Democratic governor’s veto if a Democrat is elected and in the event of an incoming Republican governor, breaking the GOP supermajority would give Democrats the power to prevent harmful constitutional amendments from getting on the ballot.
In 2026, Democrats have a clear path to weakening the GOP grip on power and creating a stronger check on partisan overreach.
The DLCC has identified key districts across Kansas where Democratic candidates can make the difference in the fight to break Republican supermajorities to strengthen Democrats’ ability to shape the future of Kansas.Â
Our Target Race candidates are community leaders who understand the challenges facing Kansas families because they live them every day. These campaigns represent some of the best opportunities to chip away at entrenched Republican power and build momentum for Democrats statewide.
