2026 is a historic opportunity to prevent a GOP supermajority in the Iowa Senate and break the supermajority in the Iowa House. Â Democrats need to protect all 17 seats in the Iowa Senate to prevent a GOP supermajority and gain 1 seat in the Iowa House to break the GOP supermajority.
In 2025, Iowa Democrats flipped two Senate seats that Trump had won by double digits, with DLCC Spotlight Candidate Catelin Drey’s win breaking the GOP supermajority. In December 2025, DLCC Spotlight Candidate Renee Hardman overperformed by double digits in her special election and prevented the GOP from reclaiming their supermajority.
The DLCC will be targeting competitive races across the state and sharing more info on DLCC Target Races in Iowa soon.

Jennifer Konfrst is a tireless advocate for Iowans – and against GOP extremism – in the state legislature. She flipped an Iowa House seat blue in 2018 and was the first woman to be elected Democratic leader of the chamber in just her second term. Throughout her time in office, she has listened to her constituents about the issues that matter most to them and has been a strong champion for public education, health care, workers’ rights, affordable housing, and finding ways to support families.
Representative Konfrst was first elected to the DLCC Board in 2024.
