We Just Dropped the DLCC’s Top 10 Target Races for July

2026 is shaping up to be a once-in-a-generation election year downballot where state Democrats could clinch the biggest gains in two decades. To meet this opportunity, the DLCC is preparing to launch over 500 Target Races across the country, including must-watch target slates every month leading up to Election Day. 

We’re launching our first slate of Top 10 races now, which includes candidates running in critical races to flip, protect, and expand the power of state Democrats across eight important state legislative chambers. As the Democratic Party’s official campaign arm for over 3,000 state legislative seats across the country, the DLCC is committed to building durable Democratic power in as many districts as possible in 2026. 

Here are this month’s top 10 Target Races to watch:

  • Brandy Tollefson (Wisconsin Assembly)
  • Sara Agerton (Pennsylvania House)
  • Lindsay Gramlich (Indiana House)
  • Jaime Churches (Michigan House)
  • Sen. Chedrick Greene (Michigan Senate)
  • Rep. Heather Matson (Iowa Senate)
  • Winn Decker (North Carolina House)

Power in our state legislatures is critical to pass policies that shape everything from affordability and health care to redistricting and our voting rights. The DLCC’s Target Race program is a core part of our nationwide strategy to protect, expand, and build Democratic power across America’s state legislatures. These Target Races represent the most competitive, high-stakes elections at this ballot level and are must-win races to continue building Democratic power.

As GOP legislators set their focus on raising costs for working families, rigging congressional maps, chipping away at voting rights, and empowering the Trump administration’s policies, state Democrats are united in combating their extreme efforts at every turn. Standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda starts with durable Democratic power in the states – where legislators are the closest to the communities they serve. Ensuring state Democrats are in the strongest possible position will take strong grassroots organizing from Americans who are fed up with being left behind by Republicans.
