About Nikki

Rep. Nikki McDonald, a nonprofit founder and former public school teacher from Olathe, is running to defend a key Democratic seat in the Kansas House this fall. Nikki has focused her work as a legislator on advocating for public education and economic relief for working families. If she is reelected, Nikki is committed to continuing the fight to keep public funds in public schools, lower the high cost of living, and expand access to quality health care.

House District 49 is one of the most competitive districts in the state, and Nikki has proven herself as a strong candidate. Despite a tough environment in 2024, she held this important seat by less than 200 votes. DLCC will be there every step of the way as she runs again to protect this key seat and Democrats work to expand their power in the Kansas House.

Kansas

This year brings a historic opportunity to build Democratic power and break the Republican supermajority in the Kansas House.

The DLCC has been on the ground in Kansas for years, capitalizing on every opportunity to build momentum and chip away at Republican control of the state’s legislature. This year, we’ve identified the most competitive House districts and are bringing national attention to candidates with the best chances of flipping Republican-held seats or protecting key Democratic footholds.

Kansas House Democrats only need to gain five seats to break a supermajority Republicans have used to override Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and enact deeply unpopular legislation, such as a recent attempt to restrict voting rights ahead of the midterm in November. Breaking the supermajority is a critical first step towards progress for Kansas.

This year’s elections are a once-in-a-decade opportunity to begin turning the tide in Kansas and in red states across the country. A brighter future is possible for all Kansans, and the DLCC is ready to support our candidates every step of the way.
