BREAKING: DLCC Statement on Maryland Democrats Going on Offense to Redistrict Ahead of 2028
The DLCC is leading the national strategy to put Democrats on offense around redistricting to counter GOP power grabs
WASHINGTON — Today, state lawmakers in Maryland announced a special session scheduled for August to consider a constitutional amendment for congressional redistricting ahead of 2028. This would make Maryland the first Democratic state to go on offense and redistrict following the Callais decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act and opened the floodgates for racial gerrymandering.
The DLCC has been at the forefront of this fight as the first party committee to call for Democrats to consider all options to fight back against mid-decade GOP gerrymandering. State legislatures are on the frontlines of shaping congressional maps and our democracy, and the DLCC’s historic Target Map represents the best opportunities to level the playing field and put Democrats across the country on offense ahead of 2030 redistricting.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“The DLCC stands with Maryland Democrats as they step up to meet this moment and prevent power-hungry Republicans from rigging their way to a majority in Congress. Republicans’ gerrymandering schemes present a state of emergency for our democracy, and state legislatures are on the frontlines of shaping the redistricting battles. The stakes have never been higher to elect Democratic majorities to state legislatures, and the DLCC is laser-focused on putting Democrats on offense to combat this existential threat to our democracy.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) leads the national strategy to secure Democratic power in our state legislatures. We are the campaign arm for more than 3,000 state legislators and thousands of candidates across all 50 states who are advancing Democratic values and standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda every single day. Over the last decade, our work has flipped 10 new chamber majorities. Those new majorities have ensured Democrats in state legislatures are positioned to protect our democracy and fundamental rights, while addressing the high cost of living and advancing opportunities. The DLCC’s national strategy and target map continue to pinpoint the most efficient paths to Democratic power across all 50 states.Â
