A Banner Night for State Democrats: 12+ Key Chambers, More Than 450 Seats Flipped Blue in 2026 Midterms

Democrats all across the country had a MASSIVE victory last night, and state legislatures are looking a lot more blue today.

The DLCC leads the national strategy to win back power in statehouses all across the country, and our results this year speak for themselves: we have flipped at least 12 chambers and flipped over 450 GOP-held seats! Hundreds of Democrats have unseated Trump’s allies and sent them packing – an enormous feat as we enter the last two years of this disastrous administration. With new majorities and trifectas across the country, Democrats have set a new high-water mark for state power not seen since 1974, the first midterm election following the Watergate scandal.

Here’s a peek (check out the full results) at the brand new landscape state Democrats have built:

Wisconsin Assembly and Senate: Democrats flipped both of these chambers blue for the first time since 2010, and have built a brand new Democratic trifecta with Gov.-elect Crowley’s win!

North Carolina House: Democrats have won a majority in the House for the first time since the 2008 elections!

Arizona House and Senate: Democrats have flipped control of the House and Senate, delivering the first Democratic trifecta since the 1960s!

Texas House: Democrats flipped at least 21 seats to win control of this chamber for the first time since 2002 – a history-making blow to the GOP’s stranglehold on the Lone Star State!

Pennsylvania House and Senate: Democrats won a majority in the Senate and expanded their House majority – and with Gov. Shapiro’s re-election, this is a new trifecta for PA Dems!

Georgia House and Senate: Democrats flipped the House blue and shrunk the GOP’s Senate majority by flipping 4 seats!

To put it plainly: tonight was a huge victory. In January, more than half the country will be living in a state with a fully Democratic state legislature, a watershed moment for progress in our country. Despite the GOP flooding money to try to buy this election, voters made their choice clear at the ballot box.

Members of the DLCC Board have a special message to all those who organized, invested, and voted on Tuesday:

How we did it:

Our wins this year build on a decade of progress and our statehouse victories will have some of the biggest and longest-lasting impacts for Democrats and for our country.  Boosted by our campaigns of over 500 Target Races, our in-state partners, and millions of supporters, the DLCC has worked year-round, cycle after cycle, for this moment. Our new coalition of Democrats across the country’s statehouses create a formidable firewall against the Trump administration’s continuous assaults on our rights and our democracy.

While we’ve shattered the GOP’s stranglehold on some state legislatures, we are in the fight to reshape the country’s balance of power for the long run. Our major wins tonight have proven that momentum is on our side – and we need our most dedicated supporters with us to defend our new chambers, the U.S. House and Senate majorities, and the path to the presidency in 2027 and 2028.

Looking ahead:

Democrats have a lot to celebrate: the historic flips of the Arizona House and Senate (and history-making trifecta with Gov. Hobbs’ re-election), the first Democratic flip of a chamber in the Deep South in the modern era in Georgia, and Democratic control of the majority of state legislative chambers in the country — but our work certainly does not and must not stop here. With numerous results outstanding, special elections in states like Texas, and likely recounts to fund in North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Minnesota, the DLCC is keeping track of all incoming election results at DLCC.org/Results as they come in.

What’s Next:

State Democrats are fired up – and we need you with us to lead the strategy to rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up and expand our map of opportunities through the thousands of candidates running for their statehouse in the next two years. You can follow along with the DLCC’s year-round work on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, our website, and by signing up for email updates as soon as news breaks.

Thank you for being in this fight.
