GERRYMANDERING WATCH: Georgia GOP Kicks Off Special Session in Desperate Power Grab

Georgia Republicans’ special session to further gerrymander their congressional and state legislative maps to rig the 2028 election begins today

WASHINGTON—Today, the GOP-controlled Georgia legislature is set to begin a special session to gerrymander the state’s congressional and state legislative maps in Republicans’ favor for 2028. This is the latest move by state Republicans to rig maps in an attempt to lock themselves into a permanent majority in Congress and disenfranchise communities of color, after the Supreme Court decision to gut the Voting Rights Act.

The stakes have never been higher to elect more Democrats to state legislatures that are charged with drawing maps, and the DLCC is laser-focused on expanding Democratic power in Georgia this November. It is imperative to build as much of an incumbency advantage as possible in 2026 to position Democrats to compete in 2028 and beyond. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment, and Georgia is a top priority on the DLCC’s ambitious Target Map as we prepare for a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shift the balance of power in the state.
