New York Goes on Offense to Counter GOP Power Grabs Across the South
After the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, going on offense in Democratic-held state legislatures is the strongest path to push back against Republican gerrymandering
WASHINGTON — New York has become the first blue state to go on offense to counter Republican gerrymandering since the Callais decision. The New York state legislature has passed a constitutional amendment to allow the state to pursue mid-decade redistricting for the 2028 election.
The DLCC was the first party committee to call for Democrats to consider all options to counter Republicans’ unprecedented power grabs. Our ambitious 2026 Target Map outlines the strongest path forward for Democrats to fight back in the ongoing redistricting battle by building durable power in state legislatures.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“The devastating Callais decision sacrificed the hard-fought gains of the Civil Rights Movement in service of Republicans’ thirst for power at all costs. This is a state of emergency for our democracy, and New York is answering the call and fighting back against Republicans aiming to cheat voters to protect their own power. We stand with New York Democrats as they take up the mantle of this fight, and the DLCC’s mission is putting more state Democrats in control of statehouses to go on offense and join the frontlines against this existential threat to our democracy.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) leads the national strategy to secure Democratic power in our state legislatures. We are the campaign arm for more than 3,000 state legislators and thousands of candidates across all 50 states who are advancing Democratic values and standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda every single day. Over the last decade, our work has flipped 10 new chamber majorities. Those new majorities have ensured Democrats in state legislatures are positioned to protect our democracy and fundamental rights, while addressing the high cost of living and advancing opportunities. The DLCC’s national strategy and target map continue to pinpoint the most efficient paths to Democratic power across all 50 states.Â
