The Future of Omaha’s “Blue Dot” Electoral Vote Hinges on State Legislative Races This November
Democrats gaining the ability to filibuster is the only thing standing in the way of Republicans rewriting the rules in NebraskaÂ
WASHINGTON — Following the Nebraska primaries this week, the DLCC is laser-focused on preserving Omaha’s “Blue Dot” status by flipping at least one seat in the state legislature this November. Nebraska is one of two states with a split electoral vote system, which has empowered Democratic presidential candidates to pick up an Electoral College vote in a state that otherwise favors the GOP.
Republicans have long sought to eliminate the “Blue Dot” in presidential elections, and Democrats must flip at least one legislative seat to gain filibuster power to prevent Republicans’ gambit to advance a winner-take-all system. As Democrats’ path to the presidency hangs in the balance, Nebraska is on the DLCC’s historic 2026 Target Map to gain Democrats’ filibuster power.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“State legislatures protect the path to the presidency, and if future Democratic presidential nominees want a shot at picking up an electoral vote in Nebraska, all eyes should be on the state legislature this November. As Republicans rewrite the rules and redraw maps across the country, our power in statehouses has never mattered more. The DLCC placed Nebraska on our Target Map last December to highlight the stakes of this year’s elections, and we are ready to hit the ground running as we move into the general election. We must protect the Blue Dot this November.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) leads the national strategy to secure Democratic power in our state legislatures. We are the campaign arm for more than 3,000 state legislators and thousands of candidates across all 50 states who are advancing Democratic values and standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda every single day. Over the last decade, our work has flipped 10 new chamber majorities. Those new majorities have ensured Democrats in state legislatures are positioned to protect our democracy and fundamental rights, while addressing the high cost of living and advancing opportunities. The DLCC’s national strategy and target map continue to pinpoint the most efficient paths to Democratic power across all 50 states.Â
