RELEASE: The SAVE America Act is Being Passed By GOP States as Congress Stalls
Republican legislatures aren’t wasting time passing copycat voter suppression laws – electing more state Democrats is the strongest path to stop this extremism & to address soaring costs
WASHINGTON —While the SAVE America Act faces an uncertain future in Congress, Republican-led states are swiftly advancing their own versions of the SAVE America Act. Just this week, Florida and Mississippi signed copycat bills into law. But they are far from the only ones – a dozen GOP states across the country have advanced similar voter suppression legislation.
As Republican state legislatures ignore the affordability crisis facing families and instead pass extreme legislation that advances Trump’s dangerous agenda, the DLCC is on offense with the most expansive midterm strategy ever to send Republicans packing.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“As costs soar and families’ budgets are squeezed, Republicans are burying their heads in the sand and making voter suppression their top priority. Republicans have lost nearly 30 state legislative seats this cycle – a clear sign that voters are fed up with their extreme agenda – and Trump’s desperate ploy to save the GOP is to attack voting access. Republicans in state legislatures are wasting no time in passing copycat SAVE America Act legislation, making sure voter suppression moves forward even with Congress in gridlock. Voters won’t stand for the GOP’s schemes and are backing state legislative Democrats who are clear-eyed about these threats and fighting for their communities.”
Here’s a breakdown of the states that are advancing state-level SAVE America Act legislation or related voter suppression proposals:Â
- Florida:Â Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill to require proof of citizenship, stricter ID requirements, and voter list maintenance and removals.
- Mississippi:Â Gov. Tate Reeves signed into law the SHIELD Act, which requires proof of citizenship, stricter ID requirements, and voter list maintenance and removals.
- Utah:Â Gov. Spencer Cox signed into law a bill that requires proof of citizenship, voter list maintenance and removals, and different standards for voting in federal and state or local elections.
- South Dakota:Â Gov. Larry Rhoden signed into law a bill that requires proof of citizenship and creates separate standards for voting in federal and state or local elections.
- Iowa:Â Republicans are currently advancing legislation to require proof of citizenship.
-
Kansas:Â Republicans are currently advancing legislation to require proof of citizenship.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) leads the national strategy to secure Democratic power in our state legislatures. We are the campaign arm for more than 3,000 state legislators and thousands of candidates across all 50 states who are advancing Democratic values and standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda every single day. Over the last decade, our work has flipped 10 new chamber majorities. Those new majorities have ensured Democrats in state legislatures are positioned to protect our democracy and fundamental rights, while addressing the high cost of living and advancing opportunities. The DLCC’s national strategy and target map continue to pinpoint the most efficient paths to Democratic power across all 50 states.
