Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy’s leadership is shaped by her working-class upbringing, where strong unions and hard work provided stability for her family. She carried those lessons into her career as a nurse and union leader, grounding her approach in service, empathy, and a willingness to negotiate and problem-solve. After struggling to navigate the health system to get her mom the care she needed during her battle with cancer, Murphy was inspired to run for office. She went on to serve for nearly two decades in both the Minnesota House and Senate, being the first to secure leadership positions in these highly competitive chambers and driving Democrats’ success in winning back Democratic majorities.
