Assembly: Democratic Supermajority

Leading the fight for progress in New York.

2026 is a historic opportunity to build a Democratic supermajority in the New York Senate. Democrats need to gain 1 seat to build a Senate supermajority. New York Democrats are already on a path to victory, having protected seats in this chamber in two February special elections.

After winning full control of the state Senate in 2018, New York Democrats have passed nation-leading climate action legislation, life-saving gun safety laws, and real tax relief for working families.

Building a Senate supermajority to complement the existing Assembly supermajority would bolster Democratic power and further protect New Yorkers from GOP extremism.

The DLCC will continue to partner with state Democrats to build power and move progress forward in New York.

DLCC Board Chair

Senate President Pro Tempore and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins

Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins isn’t just leading in New York – she’s rewriting the rules of what state leadership looks like. A former journalist and school teacher who grew up in public housing, she brings lived experience to every fight. She now serves as the longest-serving Democratic leader in one of the largest and most powerful blue states in the nation. When DC waffled, she delivered: nation-leading climate action, life-saving gun safety laws, and real tax relief for working families. Her record during Trump’s first term wasn’t just resistance–it was a masterclass in governing while chaos reigns in Washington.

Leader Stewart-Cousins was elected Chair of the DLCC Board in 2019 and has served on the DLCC board since 2017.
