North Carolina

Senate: GOP Supermajority

20D
30R

House: GOP Majority

49D
71R

North Carolina is on the DLCC’s 2026 Target Map.

2026 is a historic opportunity to gain ground in North Carolina, protect Governor Stein’s ability to veto legislation, and break and prevent GOP-gerrymandered supermajorities.

With a historic opportunity in 2026 to make significant gains in state legislatures all across the country, North Carolina is one of our best opportunities to build power by breaking the GOP supermajority in the NC Senate and preventing one in the NC House in one of the worst gerrymandered states in the country.

North Carolina House Democrats broke the GOP supermajority by one seat in 2024, showing how one seat can change the balance of power in the state and impact millions of lives.

In the past, Republicans used their supermajorities to push through an unpopular abortion ban, enact voter suppression measures, and stir up culture wars. Democrats need to protect all 49 seats in the House to prevent a new GOP supermajority, and only need to pick up one seat to break the GOP supermajority in the Senate.

The DLCC will be targeting competitive races across the state and sharing more info on DLCC Target Races in North Carolina soon.

DLCC Board Member

House Democratic Leader Robert Reives

Leader Reives has been a steadfast champion for fair representation in a state where Republicans have used gerrymandering to unfairly secure their control of the state legislature and the state’s U.S. House delegation. A former prosecutor, Reives’ rising profile is a reflection of his ability to unite Democrats in tough territory to oppose Republican power-grabbing schemes. He has sponsored legislation to strengthen public schools and to help protect children, the disabled, the environment, and property rights. With a background in conflict mediation and law, Reives is a highly skilled negotiator and consensus-builder, bringing people together to fight for progress in this top battleground state.

Leader Reives was first elected to the DLCC Board in 2024.
