ICYMI: Texas Rep. Craig Goldman May Have Violated Federal Law

WASHINGTON — Yesterday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that a property company owned by Texas Republican Representative Craig Goldman may have violated federal law when it tried to evict a tenant during April, ignoring provisions in the federal CARES Act that protected tenants from eviction. The incident is just the latest proof that nothing — not a pandemic, not federal law — can stop Republicans from being callous.

“Throughout this crisis, Republicans in Texas and across the country have continually ignored the struggles of working families, and Representative Goldman’s reprehensible conduct is the clearest example yet,” said Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post. “If you’re as disgusted by his callous actions as I am, then there’s no other choice: we must make sure he and his whole party are in the minority after November.”

While not every Republican has been so brazen as to violate the law in their zeal to return to business as usual, the GOP has continually pushed to reopen the country in the face of the pandemic. Texas’s premature opening — championed by Republicans in the legislature — has become a cautionary tale for the rest of the country.

Republicans’ failed leadership on the coronavirus pandemic is dragging them down at all levels of the ballot. Democrats need to flip just nine seats in the Texas House to win a majority, and Beto O’Rourke carried nine Republican-held seats in his Senate campaign two years ago. Representative Goldman’s Fort Worth-based district only narrowly backed Senator Ted Cruz that year and is yet another of Democrats’ long list of competitive pickup opportunities.

This November, Goldman faces Iraq War veteran Elizabeth Beck in the race for HD-97. His latest transgression is just further proof that he is not fit to serve in the Texas House, and voters in Tarrant County will hold him accountable in just over two months.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the official Democratic organization dedicated to winning state legislative seats. Earlier this year, the DLCC unveiled its unprecedented $50 million campaign to “Flip Everything” this November. Since Trump’s election, the DLCC and state partners have flipped over 450 seats and 10 chambers from red to blue.
