Florida Democrat Margaret Good Flips 36th Seat From Red To Blue In High-Profile Win
Rep.-elect Good defeated son of one of the wealthiest members of Congress

WASHINGTON — Tonight Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) Executive Director Jessica Post celebrated yet another special election victory for state Democrats, this time in Florida where Representative-elect Margaret Good scored a critical victory in the special election for House District 72.

Good defeated Republican James Buchanan, whose father is one of the wealthiest members of Congress, U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, in the special election for Florida House District 72, winning by over 7 points (52% of the vote) in a district that Trump won by nearly five points in 2016. Tonight’s performance marked a 12-point vote swing in this district from the 2016 presidential election.

“Representative-elect Margaret Good’s campaign was dedicated to the people of Sarasota County who are tired of Florida Republicans peddling a Trump agenda counter to their values,” said Post. “Rep.-elect Good went door-to-door, talking with voters about affordable health care, fully funded public schools, safeguarding LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights, and protecting Florida’s beautiful environment. The DLCC is proud of the investments we made to support Rep.-elect Good in her fight to flip HD-72, and we look forward to continuing our work alongside Florida Democrats as we prepare to elect more Democrats to the Florida Legislature ahead of 2020 redistricting.”

Good, a featured DLCC Spotlight candidate, was endorsedby former Vice President Joe Biden, who recognized that this election was a crucial step forward for Democrats as they aim to break Republicans’ supermajority in the chamber.

The DLCC invested $10,000 in the state to secure this win and directed an additional $10,000 in support to the Good campaign through its Spotlight Races page and email program. Using lessons learned from Sen. Annette Taddeo’s special election win in SD-40 last year, DLCC staff provided consistent strategic support throughout the race, helping Florida Democrats prepare winning campaign strategies and execute a successful field program. The community rallied around Good, with volunteers knocking on nearly 45,000 doors (volunteer efforts the weekend before the election accounted for an astounding 35% of the total doors knocked) and making over 116,000 phone calls in support of her campaign.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs, which has led to Democrats flipping 36 contested seats since Trump’s inauguration. The DLCC is building on Democrats’ winning momentum and continues to lay the groundwork for substantial gains in 2018 in statehouses nationwide. State Democrats recently scored critical victories in MinnesotaMissouri, Washington, Virginia, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Hampshire, Georgia, and elsewhere, while also leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies.
