DLCC Declares Landslide Democratic Victories in Georgia Special Elections
Democratic Representatives-elect Deborah Gonzalez and Jonathan Wallace two state House districts from red to blue

WASHINGTON — Tonight DLCC Executive Director Jessica Post congratulated Georgia Representatives-elect Deborah Gonzalez and Jonathan Wallace on their victories in the special elections for HD-117 and HD-119, respectively.

An attorney and longtime activist, Rep.-elect Gonzalez’s platform focused on expanding and protecting health care access, providing quality education systems, and supporting working families by ensuring a livable wage. Named to DLCC’s Spotlight Races, Gonzalez flipped the longstanding Republican district from red to blue, garnering 53% of the vote.

Jonathan Wallace is a software developer who ran on establishing an independent redistricting commission, in addition to expanding health care access and protecting public schools. He won with 56.7% of the vote. Wallace was also featured on our Spotlight Races page.

“Congratulations to Representatives-elect Gonzalez and Wallace on their outstanding victories,” said Post. “Neither district had seen a Democratic challenger since before redistricting but both Deborah and Jonathan knew that by stepping up and putting their names on the ballot, they could make a difference in their communities during these politically turbulent times. The DLCC was proud to highlight their campaigns on our Spotlight Races page and we thank Deborah and Jonathan for their hard work blazing the way for more Democratic victories in The Peach State in 2018 and beyond.”

With HD-117 and HD-119 in the hands of Democrats, Georgia Democrats are one step closer to their goal of retaking the state’s lower chamber ahead of 2020 redistricting.
