Democrats have flipped 26 seats this cycle, while Republicans have still flipped zero
WASHINGTON — Louisiana Democrat Chasity Verret Martinez just clinched a key victory to defend a Democratic seat in a district that Trump carried by 13 points. Republicans have been underperforming in special elections and were angling for their first flip since Trump’s election, but they fell short once again. This comes on the heels of Texas Democrat Taylor Rehmet scoring an upset victory just last weekend with a whopping 32-point swing in Fort Worth.
Democrats have now flipped 26 seats since Trump’s election across red and battleground territory, and Republicans have flipped zero. There are more special elections to watch on the horizon in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maine, and more, as the DLCC continues to build power and momentum heading into our historic target map this November.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Republicans just squandered their first flip opportunity in an election they should’ve had in the bag. Since Trump’s election, Republicans have faced defeat after defeat – even in ruby red districts. It’s clear that the backlash to Republicans’ toxic agenda is reaching every corner of the country as Democrats build strong campaigns to compete in red states like Louisiana and Texas. As Republicans raise prices and leave working families in the dust, no special election is off limits for the DLCC and state Democrats. We’re building momentum as we approach the midterms, where we have a historic opportunity to flip 650 seats and achieve the biggest gains down-ballot in two decades.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
