WASHINGTON — Virginia House Democrats just passed a constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would allow the legislature to pursue mid-cycle redistricting in response to GOP gerrymandering across the country. The amendment now heads to the Senate, and if it passes the full legislature, it would go to voters in a special election as early as this spring.

This would not have been possible without the DLCC delivering the largest Democratic House majority in nearly 40 years in 2025, and protecting the Virginia Senate in a majority-deciding special election earlier this month, which increases the chances of this resolution fully passing.

The DLCC has called for Democrats to consider all options to counter Republicans’ unprecedented power grabs ahead of 2026, and launched a new target map that represents the best opportunities to create redistricting parity and build power ahead of 2030.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“Virginia House Democrats just took essential action to safeguard our democracy and push back against Republicans’ power grabs. The DLCC worked hand-in-hand with Virginia’s leaders in 2025 to grow our legislative majorities, ensuring this option was on the table. We know Republicans continue to scheme ways to steal seats and elections, and the redistricting fight will be won or lost in state legislatures. Our democracy can only be secured by Democrats winning more majorities, and the DLCC’s 2026 target map identifies the path to make gains and protect our democracy.”

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) is the campaign arm of Democratic state legislatures and leads the national strategy for building power and winning new majorities. Over the last three decades, we have strategized cycle over cycle to win majorities and lead the effort to bring national attention and investment to our ballot level, winning nearly a dozen new chamber majorities over the last decade. Our work has ensured that nearly half of Americans are represented by at least one Democratic majority in their statehouse. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and have the closest connections to Americans’ day-to-day lives. From protecting fundamental freedoms and voting rights to growing the middle class and advancing opportunity, the DLCC and state legislators are moving the Democratic agenda forward and shaping the future of this country.
