Virginia Voters Approve Redistricting Referendum to Counter GOP Power Grab

The DLCC helped clinch a historic House majority last year to put Virginia Democrats on offense around redistricting

WASHINGTON — Voters just passed a referendum in Virginia to allow the legislature to draw new maps mid-cycle to respond to Republicans’ nationwide gerrymandering schemes. Unlike GOP states, which have rushed rigged maps through the process without voter input, Virginia ensured voters in the commonwealth were included in this high-stakes decision.

This victory was made possible by the historic Democratic majority in the Virginia House of Delegates that the DLCC helped secure in 2025. Electing more Democratic majorities to the states is essential to winning the redistricting fight, and the DLCC’s ambitious 2026 Target Map could build as many as eight new Democratic majorities in November to even the playing field ahead of 2030 redistricting.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“Virginians just delivered a massive blow to the GOP plot to rig control of Congress through unfair maps in 2026 and beyond. We applaud voters in Virginia for answering the national call to protect our democracy, yet the fight is far from over. Republican redistricting schemes run through state legislatures, and every election between now and 2030 will determine who draws the maps and holds power at every level of government across the country for the next decade. Democrats must win more statehouse majorities to protect our elections and our democracy, and the DLCC is laser-focused on delivering those wins this November.”
