DLCC Statement on Louisiana GOP’s Redistricting Power Grab

As states across the South gerrymander maps in the wake of the Callais decision, the stakes for state legislative races have never been higher

WASHINGTON — Louisiana has become the first of many anticipated GOP-controlled states to announce its state legislature will gerrymander new maps following the Louisiana v. Callais decision, which weakened the Voting Rights Act to open the floodgates of racial gerrymandering. Despite absentee voting already underway and early voting set to begin this weekend, Louisiana Republicans are upending and delaying U.S. House primaries to pass a new rigged map for their political gain.

As Republicans aim to cheat voters to protect their slipping U.S. House majority, the DLCC is driving the national strategy to expand Democratic power in state legislatures, which are key to the larger redistricting battle. With the stakes higher than ever after yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, the DLCC’s ambitious 2026 Target Map represents the best path forward to put Democrats on offense around redistricting battles every year between now and 2030.
