BREAKING: DLCC Breaks GOP Supermajority in Kansas House
Kansas House Democrats win most power since the 2010 Red Wave
WASHINGTON — In a stunning victory, Democrats in Kansas have successfully flipped enough seats in the House to break the Republican supermajority for the first time since the 2010 Red Wave. Kansas Republicans have wielded their supermajorities to override Democratic Governor Laura Kelly’s vetoes and enact legislation even after voters have voiced their disapproval. Breaking the House supermajority in Kansas was a top priority for the DLCC, and these gains in the legislature will serve as a crucial check to the toxic power of Kansas Republicans.
The DLCC’s proven strategy to build Democratic power in GOP-controlled states like Kansas takes dedicated work over multiple cycles, chipping away at deeply entrenched Republican power in state legislatures. Nationwide, it is a record-breaking night for Democrats, and gaining ground in Kansas is a key part of that success.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:
“Democrats in the Kansas House just delivered a decisive victory. For over a decade, the Kansas GOP has weaponized their supermajorities to attack the rights of Kansans and push through an unpopular and dangerous agenda. Tonight, voters have put Democrats in a stronger position to fight against Republican extremism and stand up for communities across the state.
“The DLCC will continue to put statehouses at the center of the national strategy and chip away at entrenched Republican power in states like Kansas to build durable Democratic power seat by seat.”
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) leads the national strategy to secure Democratic power in our state legislatures. We are the campaign arm for more than 3,000 state legislators and thousands of candidates across all 50 states who are advancing Democratic values and standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda every single day.
