BREAKING: DLCC and Democrats Win 51 Chambers to Control Majority of State Legislative Chambers

State legislative Democrats have made historic gains that reshape the political landscape 

WASHINGTON — In a monumental shift in power, the DLCC and state legislative Democrats have flipped 12 chambers so far, winning the most chambers since 2008 and putting Democrats in control of more than half the chambers in the country.

Democrats held just 29 majorities when Donald Trump was elected in 2016. After a decade of progress, Democrats now control 51 majorities, putting them in their strongest position in the Trump Era to fight and deliver on behalf of tens of millions of Americans. With this sweep, Democrats have achieved their best performance since the Watergate scandal.

Underlying these victories, the DLCC launched the most expansive Target Map in the organization’s history this year, targeting 42 chambers across 27 states. We worked directly in the states to build the infrastructure and provide the support needed to seize this once-in-a-generation opportunity to build durable Democratic power all across the map.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“After flipping at least 12 majorities, the DLCC and state Democrats now hold 51 majorities, over half of the chambers across the country. This is a massive shift in the landscape of power and builds on a decade of progress that has put state Democrats in a stronger position all across the country. Our work to flip these crucial chambers gives state legislative Democrats more power to push back against Republicans’ MAGA agenda in the last two years of the Trump Administration and to lead the fight for progress on behalf of millions of Americans.

“The path to the presidency and federal power runs through our statehouses, and our sweeping victories tonight lay the foundation for 2027, 2028, and beyond. Statehouse elections will continue to have tremendous impacts on the future of our nation and defending our new majorities will be crucial to ensuring Democrats hold power over redistricting, voting rights, and protecting our elections.
