WASHINGTON—State legislative Democrats are fresh off yet another massive special election upset, bringing the tally of seats flipped since Trump’s election to 31 for Democrats and zero for Republicans.
With less than 80 days to go until Election Day, this is the latest sign of what is possible for state Democrats in November. The DLCC continues to use data to pinpoint the most competitive races where outcomes will have the biggest impact. Democrats have a massive opportunity to remake the balance of power in the country for years to come.

The DLCC’s Target Map reflects the scale of opportunity in 2026:
- 42 chambers across 27 states
- More than 500 seats, nearly 400 of which are currently held by Republicans
- Nearly a third of the GOP-held seats voted against Trump in 2024

- AZ House, AZ Senate, MI House, MN House, NH House, NH Senate, WI Assembly, WI Senate

- 10 fewer Republican supermajorities
- FL House, FL Senate, IA House, IN House, KS House, MO Senate, MO House, NC Senate, OH House, SC House

- 50 seats could determine control of 11 of our battleground chambers
- AZ House, AZ Senate, WI Assembly, WI Senate, MI House, MI Senate, PA House, MN House, MN Senate, NH House, NH Senate
- 12 million voters live in overlapping congressional and state legislative targets and will decide 44 targeted House races and nine battleground chambers
- Democrats are aiming to gain control of seven chambers with margins of five or fewer seats
