BREAKING: DLCC Breaks Nebraska GOP Supermajority, Safeguarding the ‘Blue Dot’

WASHINGTON — In a crucial victory, Democratic-aligned candidates have successfully flipped enough seats to break the supermajority Nebraska Republicans have held since 2024. Nebraska is one of two states with a split electoral vote system, which has allowed recent Democratic presidential candidates to pick up an Electoral College vote in a state that otherwise favors the GOP. Republicans threatened to upend the system, eliminate the Omaha “blue dot,” and seize an electoral vote. Breaking the supermajority in the unicameral legislature gives Democrats filibuster power to block the worst of the MAGA agenda, including GOP efforts to rewrite the rules before the 2028 presidential election.

The DLCC’s strategy to build power in GOP-controlled states like Nebraska takes dedicated work over multiple cycles. Reaching this critical benchmark was part of our strategy to chip away at deeply entrenched Republican power in state legislatures and protect Democrats’ path to the presidency. Nationwide, this is a record-breaking election for Democrats, and gaining ground in Nebraska is pivotal as we look to 2028 and beyond.
