BREAKING: DLCC Breaks South Carolina House Supermajority

South Carolina Democrats grow power in the House for the first time since 2008

WASHINGTON — In a blow to Republican power, South Carolina House Democrats have successfully broken the Republican supermajority, flipping seats in the chamber for the first time since 2008. South Carolina is home to some of the most extreme Republicans, and the GOP has used their unchecked power to gerrymander themselves into power and disenfranchise communities of color. Now, Democrats are better positioned to fight back against Republicans’ dangerous agenda in South Carolina.

The DLCC’s strategy to build power in GOP-controlled states like South Carolina takes dedicated work over multiple cycles. Picking up seats is part of our continued strategy to chip away at deeply entrenched Republican power in state legislatures. Nationwide, it is a record-breaking night for Democrats, and reaching this benchmark of power in South Carolina is a key step toward a brighter future.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“South Carolina House Democrats just delivered a decisive win and broke the supermajority that Republicans drew for themselves. The South Carolina GOP has proved time and again that they will choose to protect their own power at the expense of the people, including rigging the congressional maps to eliminate a majority-minority district right before the midterms. Despite Republicans’ efforts, the voters have made it clear that enough was enough. Democrats grew power for the first time since 2008 and are in a stronger position to fight back against the worst of the MAGA agenda.

“This critical victory in South Carolina underscores the importance of the DLCC’s work to break entrenched Republican power across the map as part of our strategy to rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up.”

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) leads the national strategy to secure Democratic power in our state legislatures. We are the campaign arm for more than 3,000 state legislators and thousands of candidates across all 50 states who are advancing Democratic values and standing up to the dangerous MAGA agenda every single day.
