BREAKING: DLCC Makes Historic Gains, Sweeping the Statehouse Map With Hundreds of Seat Flips And Multiple New Majorities

Last night saw the largest number of Democratic statehouse flips in a single election since the 1980s 

WASHINGTON — With results still coming in, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee has made sweeping gains on a historic night including more than 300 state legislative seat flips and at least ten statehouse majorities flipped from red-to-blue.

This is the single largest shift in the balance of statehouse power since the Republican Red Wave in 2010 and is the largest number of Democratic chamber flips in a single election since 1982.

The biggest victories of the night include ten new statehouse majorities:

• Georgia House
• Michigan House
• Minnesota House
• New Hampshire House
• New Hampshire Senate
• North Carolina House
• Pennsylvania Senate
• Texas House
• Wisconsin Assembly
• Wisconsin Senate

Overall, these historic wins, alongside races and chambers yet to be called, will likely give Democrats an advantage in the states for the first time in a generation. This massive shift will have long-lasting implications for all levels of the ballot as state legislatures continue to shape the power of governors, draw maps for Congress, and protect the path to the presidency. 

The DLCC leads the national strategy to defend and expand Democratic power in state legislatures, building upon a decade of hard-fought progress, and launched the largest Target Map in the organization’s history to seize the once-in-a-generation opportunity in these midterms. The DLCC invested early, worked year-round in states, and overcame Republican gerrymandering and spending to secure durable Democratic governing power in state legislatures all across the country —and we’re ready to continue building from here.
