This stunning victory gives Democrats legislative power in the Lone Star State for the first time since 2002

WASHINGTON — In a political earthquake, Democrats flipped 14 seats and won control of the Texas House for the first time since 2002, a stunning overperformance on Republican-gerrymandered maps. In what was seen as one of the great Republican strongholds, Texans sent a loud and clear message that they are ready for a new era, led by Democrats and their vision for the state’s future. With this flip, we have reshaped the political map and put Democrats in a much stronger position nationally to shape redistricting, defend voting rights, and push back against the Trump administration.  

The DLCC has worked in Texas for years to build a path to break Republicans’ over 20-year-long chokehold on the legislature. With Gina Hinojosa as governor, House Democrats can begin moving Texas forward for the first time in decades. On a record-breaking night for Democrats across the country, Texas has proved what is possible when we invest at the state legislative ballot level—solidifying durable Democratic power to protect voting and civil rights, oversee elections, and shape redistricting maps.
