DLCC Shatters North Carolina Republicans’ Hold on Power, Flipping House

In a stunning victory, Democrats win chamber for first time since 2008

WASHINGTON — In a monumental victory, the DLCC and North Carolina Democrats flipped the House, overcoming Republican gerrymandering and millions in spending to control a chamber for the first time since the 2010 Red Wave. This victory reshapes power in North Carolina and changes the national political map. North Carolinians delivered a clear mandate tonight—they will not allow Republicans to weaponize their legislative power anymore. By flipping the House, Democrats have secured a critical lever of power over redistricting and election administration in the state. 

The DLCC has worked in North Carolina for years, using a multi-cycle strategy to rebuild Democratic power despite Republican-rigged maps. After breaking the House supermajority just one election ago, the DLCC built on the momentum, knowing that a majority was within striking distance. On a record-breaking night for Democrats across the country, North Carolina proved what is possible when we invest at the state legislative ballot level—solidifying durable Democratic power to protect voting and civil rights, oversee elections, and shape redistricting.
