BREAKING: Supreme Court Ruling Reaffirms States’ Authority to Shape Elections & Mail-In Ballots

While today’s ruling is a win for democracy, Trump’s ongoing attacks against voting access raise the stakes for electing Democrats to state legislatures to protect our elections

WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that reaffirmed states’ authority to shape elections by accepting mail-in ballots that are postmarked by when polls close but received after Election Day. While this is an important ruling, threats to our elections remain as President Trump has repeatedly floated federalizing elections and undermining mail-in voting. State legislatures will continue to shape everything from election administration and certification to voting laws, and the DLCC is laser-focused on building Democratic state power to protect our democracy.

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams issued the following statement:

“While today’s ruling is a win for democracy, we know that President Trump continues to promote dangerous proposals like the SAVE America Act to sow chaos ahead of the midterm elections. The strongest path to fight back runs through state legislatures that will continue to shape how elections are run and voting laws.
