WASHINGTON — President Trump has said the quiet part out loud – Republicans are more interested in fighting costly and unpopular wars that risk American lives rather than addressing soaring prices that his policies have inflicted on hurting families. This week, Trump said the U.S. “can’t take care of daycare, Medicaid, [and] Medicare” while fighting a war, saying these programs should instead be handled “on a state basis.” Trump’s remarks mirror his approach to Republicans’ devastating budget law last year that stripped health care and food benefits for millions of Americans, while hampering state budgets. While Trump’s administration reneges on its promise to lower costs, state Democrats are holding Republicans accountable – and we’re winning election after election as voters back state Democrats fighting for them. Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Sam Paisley issued the following statement: “Republicans continue to leave families behind as they abdicate their responsibilities in Washington and make basic necessities more expensive. As Republicans put daycare, Medicare, and Medicaid on the chopping block to prioritize an unpopular, deadly war, the leaders and candidates in statehouses are sounding the alarm on how harmful these cuts will be for families. State Democrats are on offense and ready to hold Republicans accountable as we head into November.”
