In Second Win of the Night, DLCC Flips 39th Seat From Red to Blue
Representative-elect Phil Young flips Connecticut House District 120 in special election

WASHINGTON — Tonight Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) Executive Director Jessica Post celebrated yet another special election win, this time in the battleground state of Connecticut. Representative-elect Phil Young claimed victory in the special election for House District 120, defeating his Republican opponent and ending Republicans’ more than 40-year control of this district.

Tonight’s victory marks the 39th seat to flip from red to blue since Trump’s inauguration — coming hours after New Hampshire Representative-elect Phil Spagnuolo flipped a Laconia district from red to blue — and continues DLCC’s four-week flip streak after previous wins in KentuckyFloridaMinnesota, and Missouri.

“We just broke another Republican stronghold – this time in Connecticut,” said Post. “Congratulations to Representative-elect Young on flipping this seat. As an advocate for fiscal responsibility while serving as Majority Leader of the Stratford Town Council, voters know he’ll do the same for them in the Connecticut House. The DLCC is proud of our engagement in this state, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside Connecticut Democrats as we fight to protect this chamber in 2018 ahead of critical 2020 redistricting.”

A proud Stratford resident for almost four decades, Young campaigned on fully funding schools, protecting the environment, and tackling the opioid crisis. He is also a career chef well known for his cooking and business management of the Bridge House in Devon. The DLCC invested $10,000 in the state, helping to build staff capacity and party operations critical to tonight’s win.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is the only organization exclusively committed to electing Democrats to state legislatures all over the country and winning Democratic control of chambers. For over two decades, the DLCC has been working with state legislative leaders to invest strategically in state programs, which has led to Democrats flipping 39 seats since Trump’s inauguration. The DLCC is building on Democrats’ winning momentum and continues to lay the groundwork for substantial gains in 2018 in statehouses nationwide. State Democrats recently scored critical victories in New HampshireKentuckyFlorida, MinnesotaMissouri, Washington, Virginia, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, FloridaGeorgia, and elsewhere, while also leading the resistance against the Trump administration’s extremist policies.
