Democrats Hold Majorities in Both Chambers in Louisiana
Washington, DC—Democrats held both chambers of the Louisiana state legislature.
Control of the Senate was decided in the primary in October; control of the House was
decided in the run-off on Saturday, November 17.
“Louisiana Democrats held their ground despite overwhelming odds against them,” says
DLCC Executive Director Michael Sargeant. “Democrats lost over half their incumbents
due to term limits. National Republicans threw everything they had at the Louisiana
House, and came up short.”
Republican groups seeking the majority outspent Democrats two-to-one. Newt
Gingrich’s GOPAC, disgraced Republican U.S. Senator David Vitter’s Louisiana
Committee for a Republican Majority, the pro-voucher All Children Matter and other
affiliated groups spent roughly $2 million dollars trying to flip the Louisiana House.
“Rep. Don Cazayoux spearheaded the best, most centralized effort the House Democratic
caucus has ever put forth,” says Sargeant. “They ran solid operations and recruited
candidates who were well-rooted in their districts. The strength of their efforts is why
they were able to maintain their majority despite the onslaught.”
Both chambers in Louisiana serve four-year terms.
