in Virginia Senate Special Election
Democrat Mark Herring defeated Republican
Mick Staton in a special election for the Virginia
Senate. Herring will represent parts of Loudon and
Fairfax Counties in the 33rd District, the seat previously
occupied by Bill Mims who resigned to serve in the

Special Democratic Victories in Minnesota
Democrats were victorious in two special
elections in Minnesota. The decision by Republican
Governor Tim Pawlenty to schedule two special elections
during the holidays – a move many view as politically
motivated – did not stop voters from coming out
to support Tarryl Clark (DFL) for State Senate in the
15th District and Larry Haws (DFL) for the Minnesota

Minnesota Republicans are playing games
with the scheduling of special elections, but Democrats
are not going to let them get away with it.
In a truly underhanded move, Republican
Governor Tim Pawlenty has scheduled two special elections
in Minnesota for December 27, 2005, just two days after

Another Democratic Win in Minnesota
On November 22, Terri Bonoff, (DFL) defeated
Plymouth Mayor Judy Johnson (R) in a special election
for the State Senate seat in Minnesota’s 43rd
District. Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty chose to
hold the special election two days before Thanksgiving
in an effort to keep voter turnout low. Read

Election Night
For the third election in a row, state
legislative Democrats picked up legislative seats on
Election Night. Democrats gained at least one seat
in Virginia and two seats in New Jersey, although one
current Democratic seat still remains undecided in
New Jersey. Now, Democrats have a seven-seat advantage
over Republicans for state legislative seats nationally. Read

The DLCC Effect
During the 2003-2004 election cycle,
Democrats moved 10 legislative chambers toward Democratic
control despite Republican gains at other levels – the
largest chamber control switch for either party since
1996.
Democrats won control of the Colorado
Senate, Colorado House, Montana Senate, Montana House,
New Jersey Senate, North Carolina House, Oregon Senate,
Vermont House and Washington Senate, and tied the
