Democrats were victorious in two special
elections in Minnesota. The decision by Republican Governor
Tim Pawlenty to schedule two special elections during the
holidays – a move many view as politically motivated – did not stop voters from coming out to support Tarryl
Clark (DFL) for State Senate in the 15th District and Larry
Haws (DFL) for the Minnesota House election in District

On November 22, Terri Bonoff, (DFL) defeated
Plymouth Mayor Judy Johnson (R) in a special election for
the State Senate seat in Minnesota’s 43rd District.

election two days before Thanksgiving in an effort to keep

Legislative Democrats Have Successful 2005 Election Night
For the third election in a row, state legislative
Democrats picked up legislative seats on Election Night.
Democrats gained at least one seat in Virginia and two seats
in New Jersey, although one current Democratic seat still
remains undecided in New Jersey. Now, Democrats have a seven-seat
advantage over Republicans for state legislative seats nationally. Read more

During the 2003-2004 election cycle,
Democrats moved 10 legislative chambers toward Democratic
control despite Republican gains at other levels—the
largest chamber control switch for either party since 1996.
Democrats won control of the Colorado Senate, Colorado House, Montana Senate,
Montana House, New Jersey Senate, North Carolina House, Oregon Senate, Vermont
