2008 Essential Races
2008 Essential Races
Throughout the next two weeks, the DLCC will unveil a list of 40 essential candidates who need our support in this election.
But we recognize our own limitations. There are plenty of strong Democrats all across the country with the potential to win important districts that we don't know about -- so we're asking for your help.
Until the end of the month, we will accept nominations for an additional 10 candidates to go on our essential races list.

Support for Democratic state representative candidate Ellen Wedum, running in New Mexico House District 59.
This is the second run at this position for Wedum, the first-term incumbent is vulnerable because of her extreme right-wing positions. Wedum needs an additional $5,000 and technical help to run some TV. 4 bulk mailings are in the works.
Every time any candidate opens their mouth they must ask the audience if from an economic standpoint are they better off than 8 years ago.
jobs overseas
gasoline
forclosure
health insurance
falliing wages
cost of heating homes
cost of food
I am sure there are more but this must be pounded on relentlessly. Reagen did so in 1980 and it worked..........
Al Frankin must be more of an attack dog, Norm Coleman has been anti working person, anti benefits etc for many years(when he was mayor, he cut benefits for union retirees......
Allen Andersen is running for the legislative seat he held 2003-2004 in Bannock County's District 29 in Idaho. In the most conservative state in the nation, Bannock County is proud to currently have 5 out of its 6 legislative seats held by Democrats.
Allen is trying to take that 6th seat back from his opponent who won in 2004. His opponent is an out-of-touch far right conservative rancher who in the last year has voted against background checks and first aid training for daycare workers and against highway funding for his hometown to fix a road that has claimed numerous lives.
While in the Legislature, Allen built a strong record of standing up against special interests and the effects of corporate lobbyists, excellent constituent service and response while leading on issues such as prison terms for violent sex offenders and education funding and teacher training.
Allen is running a strong campaign including several mailers, TV, billboards, going door to door several days a week and paid ID polling among other things. The Bannock County Democrats are known statewide for their massive and effective get-out-the-vote program involving hundreds of volunteers and poll watchers and tens of thousands of Election Day phone calls.
Allen is currently also serving as the Chair of the Bannock County Democrats in addition to running for the legislative seat. His wife, Beverly, is the county campaign headquarters office manager. They are both retired teachers and Allen worked for many years as a regional director for the Idaho Education Association.
Granted, Allen regaining his seat would not tip the balance in favor of the Democrats in the Idaho Legislature--we have our work cut out for us on that front. But it would send a strong message to the Republican Party in Idaho that they can take no seat for granted and that Democrats have the right idea about how to lead this country into the future.
Please support my race for NM Senate District 7. I have the best chance of defeating an incumbent Republican in New Mexico.
I don't think this can work to generate campaign contributions and support. Prove me wrong by going to www.rovner08.com and contributing to help Steve Rovner win in Pennsylvania's Bucks County race to turn this red seat blue. The Democrats in Pennsylvania only have a 202-201 majority and this seat will build in the important national momentum. Steve has a great opportuniity to win, but it will take more money to get on TV and get his message out. Thank you for proving me wrong.
Gretchen's opponent has an edge because of name recognition. He is also supported heavily by the Republican party. Nick Wagner is very conservative, seems to be opposed to choice, supports the death penalty and is opposed to gun control. His last campaign against Swati Dandekar was extremely negative, depicting Swati in a deplorable manner. I had been friendly with Nick before that dirty campaign.
Gretchin is knowledgable, family-oriented, hard-working and very civic-minded. She will be a worthy successor to Swati for House District 36.
My husband, Ron Mc Comb, is running for State Rep in Michigans' 93rd district. Historically this seat is ALWAYS inherited by a Republican, it has been held that way since 1932. Ron ran in 2006 and was told that he wouldn't get within 20 points in either county. Ron, a State of Michigan employee, took an unpaid leave of absence (he had to because of the Federal Hatch Act) from his job. Ron unpaid leave of absence was for 6 months, it cost him $36000 and he had to pay for insurances to keep our family protected. Ron had never run for office, he didn't have a staff just 7 volunteers and money from savings. Ron lost the race, but barely. He actually won one county and lost the larger county by 6 points.
Ron has taken a leave of absence again in 2008, but this time Ron has done things differently. Ron hired a consultant from Washington DC, he has a media coordinator and a literature developer. The largest problem we have faced this year is that the donations have been hard to come by, Ron is realistic, he says they are all buying the same food and gas that he and I are, and that the working families of this great state do not have the extra to give.
Ron is nervous though, he expected more. Ron committed to a certain amount of signs, a very aggressive 300,000 piece mailer (this has NEVER been done in these counties) and 1000 radio ads, and robo calling. The stress is apparent on his face, as to whether we will be able to afford everything we committed to, but you would never know this in his smile, or his kindness or his commitment to his fellow community member.
Ron is running against an elitist type of man. His opponent is arrogant, talks down to working men and women and has down alot of blatant "political favors" to lobbyists.
Ron's opponent has held a public forum supporting the Right to Work (for nothing) legislation, tied peoples credit scores to what they pay for insurances, and even though he sits on the education committee he voted against funding Michigan schools to "send a message to the Detroit School District that they are personally responsible for the lack of funding for all of Michigans' schools. Just to name a few.
Ron is endorsed by about every major union in the State of Michigan, but very few have given his campaign money because he is running against a first year incumbent in a district with history. Ron is undeterred. He knows his fight is hard, but he also knows that our Democratic Governor Granholm AND our Democratic US Senator Stabenow has won both of our counties. Ron knows it can be done. He just has to be able to do what his consultant and he committed to, which unfortunately costs more than we have raised and can afford.
We had such big hopes for a fund raising block party that we had sent out 2500 invites to but it was wash out by day long monsoon style rains. The look Ron Had on his face that night when we went to bed, I will never, never forget.
I wish you could meet Ron. He is so talented, intelligent and genuine. He will make a great representative. I am entering him in the above 2008 essential races because there is truly no one more deserving to serve the people of the entire State of Michigan than Ron Mc Comb.
You can view Ron's information at www.ronmccomb.com
Muscatine Iowa is the financial home of the Republican party in Iowa and has long been a Republican strong hold. This year we have a great opportunity to beat an extremely conservative Jim Hahn and turn Muscatine and district 40 blue.
Sharon Savage is a grandmother running for office for the first time. Her opponent is a long entrenched politician with deep roots. Sharon has a wealth of experience that includes being a small business owner, farm owner, teacher and social worker. She is true blue on all issues.
This is an incredibly tough fight. Help us put Sharon over the top and put a dagger into the financial heart of republican Iowa.
Herb Snyder in West Virginia State Senate District 16 is an excellent candidate. To learn more visit his website at: http://www.senatorsnyder.net/. Snyder is a reality-based legislator who will move West Virginia forward with progressive ideas for the future.
I am supporting Carol Kent in Texas HD 102 in North Dallas and Garland. This seat is held by 20 year incumbent, Tony Goolsby, who barely held onto his seat two years ago through voter suppression efforts in minority precincts and a trumped up voter fraud charge against his previous opponent. See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/art-levine/house-panel-launches-prob_b_942... for more details. Needless to say, he doesn't have a record to stand on. Now he has created a phony push poll to slime Carol with. None other than Karl Rove came down to Dallas to raise money for him. Carol currently serves as Trustee on the Richardson Independent School Board, the top rated school district in the state of Texas. Carol has been involved with public schools in North Texas for the past 25 years. She will work hard to improve public schools in Texas, work on improving North Texas air quality and make Childrens' Health insurance more accessible. See www.electcarolkent.com for more information. Texas is five seats away from regaining the state house and this is one of our best opportunities for a pickup.
I strongly concur with the last email message, Carol Kent is a tremendous candidate who seeks to replace a crooked Republican, Tony Goolsby, who has done precious little to represent his district residents except to provide earmark type legislation for his special interest bidders. Carol Kent is an education expert who wants to help fix TX education system, received Sierra Club's endorsement for her environmental views, wants to provide children with health coverage and promote economic development that will bring more high tech and green economy type jobs to North TX. Her opponent will not respect his constituents and agree to any public forums, instead he prefers to use slimy, dirt ball tactics like push polling, voter suppression and mis-representations of Carol’s opinions. Help Carol Kent win a TX House seat and bring Democrats one seat closer to the five needed to become majority party.
My name is Chuck McDowell. I have run twice (2004 and 2006) as the Democratic candidate for Utah State House of Representatives seat 38. While I lost both times I came very close in 2006 loosing by only 300 votes out of almost 5000 cast.
This district was gearymandered along with the rest of the state by the ruling Republican majority in the State Legislature in year 2000. Utah is the reddist of red states but one thing that most people outside of Utah don't understand is that in the Salt Lake County area (home of the State Capital) we Democrats enjoy what is a degree of parity with the Republicans. Salt Lake County has a Democratic Mayor and Salt Lake City has a Democratic Mayor as well.
Democrats can win here but it takes dedication, hard work and financial support to do it.
I urge you to support Charles Henderson who is running in Leg District 38 this time. Charles is a very intelligent, highly regarded, well spoken candidate and I believe he will pull even some votes from the other side of the isle. As a person that has run in this district twice I see Charles as a person that can take the next step and win.
Charles and I serve on a town council in our area and I have grown to respect Charles very much during the last 3 years of working together in that capacity.
Once again..........I hope that Charles becomes one of the targeted races you choose to support. He will make great use of whatever support you can give and WIN IN NOVEMBER!
Best regards,
Chuck McDowell

Judy Hirsh brings a much needed fresh perspective to state government that the 30 year incumbent does not.She is a working class mom with the necessary credentials that will allow her to represent this diverse district that has lacked new idea and innovation for some time. Please support Judy Hirsh for the Pa 15th Senate district.
I worked with Linda NEWELL on the staff of HD38 two years ago. She was Vice-Chair; I was Treasurer. She was a joy to work with.
Hey, I'm not proud. Pick me! Pick me!
(This is like being back in grade school again.)
I'm running for an open seat in redder-than-red Idaho. Let me tell you why I think I can win.
1. in the primary, when there was no contested Democratic race and when Democrats had no reason to show up and many Democrats crossed over to vote on the Republican side (which is legal in this state) I still got 15% of the total vote.
2. The incumbent was defeated, which indicated to me some level of Republican discontent.
3. Lots of people have moved here in the past two years, including people from more liberal places, young people, and Hispanics (who tend to vote Democratic).
4. My opponent has no experience, and his community involvement is limited to his church, whereas I have a Masters in Public Administration and an internship with the Legislature (on top of 20 years as a writer and analyst in Silicon Valley).
5. My opponent belongs to a conservative religious group that does give him some built-in base, but turns off some other people, who may well choose a Democrat over someone from that group.
6. My opponent is running a lackluster campaign; his website hasn't been updated since before the primary, he was two months late submitting his answers to the newspaper for endorsement, and I've gotten no mail nor seen no signs of his since the primary.
7. I have better ideas! but hey, don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself, with our newspaper's unabridged audio of their endorsement interviews:

Thanks!
We are four seats from taking back the Ohio House, and it cannot be done without winning this race.
I've known Linda Newell for about five years while active in local Democrat party activities.
I know she has a great passion for many things Democrats hold dear, especially education and women's rights.
She is an articulate and well-versed candidate who would contribute a great deal to the State Senate in Colorado.
Linda is fair minded and treats everyone with respect and courtesy.
Fred Walser is the best candidate to ever run against Republican incumbent Val Stevens.
Val Stevens is off the wall she said on the house floor that same sex marriage leads to necrophillia and beastiality. She also said that domestic violence is just simple a women going through pms. The rediculous comments she makes keep coming. Fred walser has been in law enforcement for over 40yrs and is a stand up citizen. Any help from democrats across the country would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!
I have known Charles to be a man of integrity, honesty and one willing to
step up to the plate with regard to community service. Charles is deserving
of, and has earned the right to your vote. You won't be let down. I would strongly urge your participation in this hotly contested race.
Mike Kellermeyer, former West Jordan Council Member
I'd like to nominate Jerry Sullivan in IA House District 59.
District 59, covering much of the Western suburbs of Des Moines, IA, has been held by the Republican party since the 1960s. However, the sitting Representative will not seek another term, and there were primaries on both the Democratic and Republican sides. On the Republican side, a far-right young lawyer (and Polk County Chair for the Sam Brownback Presidential campaign) named Chris Hagenow won, while on the Democratic side, Jerry Sullivan won with almost 80% of the vote.
While his opponent has no record of public service, Jerry is currently the Mayor of the town of Windsor Heights, was on the City Council, and also served on the Board of Education of St. Theresa's Church. He enjoys a lot of support from the heavily Catholic area, and has been active in the community for 40 years. He was on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and still mentors his little brother of 8 years.
Additionally, he has a lot of experience working with members of both parties among all levels of government. He has served on the boards of countless organizations and charities. In short, he is the perfect candidate for this district.
The Republicans believe that having an (R) next to your name automatically makes you the winner of this seat, but Jerry's deep roots in the community and experience in both the private and public sectors make this seat extremely competetive this year. Jerry's outraised, outspent, and outworked his opponent and this will continue until Election Day.
Texas HD55 is THE race to watch! It's been a long time since we've had a dynamic candidate like SAM MURPHEY. In fact, not since Chet Edwards was illegally redistricted from us by ole Delay have we had such a excellent opportunity. SAM MURPHEY is a veteran, well respected in the community, has a solid platform, and he appeals to a broad range of voters. I've attended many debates and left each time knowing SAM MURPHEY is by far the superior candidate and will represent us well. Texas folks know we need desperate help in Austin. Sam's opponent is well funded by James "leave no public school child a dime" Leininger but that hasn't stopped the bi-partisan effort here to get Sam elected. SAM NEEDS YOUR HELP TOO! SAM'S endorsed by Tx State Teachers Assn, Tx Am Fed of Teachers and Texas Parent PAC.
HELP US SEND SAM MURPHEY TO AUSTIN AND TURN TEXAS BLUE!
Sam Murphey is the best person for Texas House District 55. He knows exactly what the people in Texas need. Better education for the children in public schools, lower property taxes, working for the Veterans and many more issues that has to be addressed.
Sherrie Matula is running for Texas HD 129 which is in the SE Houston area. I met her two years ago during her last campaign. We worked hard to get her elected and we almost did, which is very surprising as this was Tom Delay country. Now Sherrie has even more support and funding.
Her opponent is so ethically challenged that the Texas Ethics Commission has fined him three times. Of course, Karl Rove held a fundraiser for him! Sherrie's background as a career educator, school board member and science education consultant make her the perfect person
to help solve many of the problems confronting our state and nation. Her race is considered one of the five needed to turn Texas blue. Please check her website at www.sherriematula.com to see what she has done to help her future constituents following Hurricane Ike.
I have been very happy that Chris Hagenow won the election, the last thing we need is the epidemic and disease like actions of tax and spend Sullivan types in higher offices. Windsor Heights is like a martial law area,Sullivan should more time taking classes on civil rights to school his rogue officials on the Constitution!
